Mali lies largely within the Sahelian and Sudanian agroecological zones, with irrigated agriculture concentrated along the Niger River. Approximately 6% of land is arable, supporting rice, millet, sorghum, maize, cotton, groundnuts and horticultural crops. Major agricultural imports include rice, wheat and vegetable oils, while exports include cotton, livestock and mangoes. Mali has no commercial GM crop production, although a biosafety framework regulates activities involving GMOs.
