Overview

Zimbabwe lies on a subtropical plateau dominated by savanna agroecological zones. Approximately 10–11% of land is arable, supporting maize, tobacco, cotton, soybeans, wheat and sugarcane. Major imports include wheat, rice and edible oils, while exports include tobacco, cotton and sugar. Zimbabwe does not commercially cultivate GM crops but permits regulated importation of GM food, feed and processing products.

The National Biotechnology Authority Act of 2006; Statutory Instrument 157

National Biotechnology Authority

The National Biotechnology Authority Act (2006) and the National Biotechnology Authority (Food, Feed, Food and Feed Additives and Seeds) (Import, Export, Transit) Regulations, 2018 regulate GM imports. The National Biotechnology Authority is the Competent National Authority.

Import Permit

1. Register company with the National Biotechnology Authority.
2. Submit application with company documents and GMO certificate.
3. Attach PCR test results where required.
4. Pay prescribed fees.
5. Applications are processed within 24 hours.
6. Successful applicants receive Form FF5.
7. Appeals are permitted.
